Hymns by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette
(January 2005)

Carolyn Winfrey Gillette is the author of Gifts of Love:  New Hymns for Today’s Worship (Geneva Press, 2000) and co-pastor of the Limestone Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Delaware (starting August 2004) after serving as the co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Pitman, NJ for ten years.  A second book of her 77 new hymns, Songs of Grace:  Hymns for God and Neighbor, is at the publisher and will be in available in later 2008.

Please email Carolyn for permission to use her hymns:  bcgillette@comcast.net

New Hymn:  “O God, that Great Tsunami is a hymn that resulted when Peter Holden, an Australian pastor who has served in Indonesia,  revised one of Carolyn’s hymns; it is now on the web sites of Church World Service, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, United Methodist Church (formatted with the music) and the Uniting Church of Australia.

New Hymn:  “O God, We Rage at Hurtful Things” is a new hymn for healing to the tune of St. Anne CM (“Our God, Our Help in Ages Past”).

Two New Anthems:  Spirit of God| This anthem, with words by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette and music by Michael Bedford, celebrates the Spirit of God revealed in many ways throughout the ages. Children, youth, and adult choirs each sing one stanza alone but combine together to sing the first and last stanzas together. The oboe joins the anthem during interlude passages as well as both the stanzas sung by the children’s choir and the concluding stanza.  Handbells further highlight the final stanza with an added dimension of sound. Appropriate for Pentecost or any service emphasizing the Holy Spirit.  We Thank You, God, For Teachers This anthem, with words by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette and music by Mark Patterson, honors those special individuals we call “teachers.” From teachers in the classroom to teachers at church, home and elsewhere, this text celebrates how God uses teachers to nurture and strengthen our lives.  Both anthems are published by the Choristers Guild.

Lectionary List:  A list of the new hymns by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette for use in worship services during Year A - The Gospel of Matthew of the Revised Common Lectionary (November 2004–November 2005), other special days in the church year and civil calendar is now available.  Email us for a free copy of this lectionary list.

We would welcome your suggestions for themes or tunes for new hymns

"Sing a New Song," Princeton Seminary's inSpire magazine feature article on Carolyn and her hymn writing.

Forty-five of the hymns listed above are in a book of Carolyn's hymns: Gifts of Love: New Hymns for Today's Worship (Geneva Press, July 2000).  We intentionally worked with the publisher to make it inexpensive ($8!) and a purchase of the book includes copyright permission for its 45 new hymns, allowing them to be copied for use in a local church.  The book includes worship bulletin notes/commentaries on each of the hymns as well as indices to scriptural references, topics, and metrical settings that makes for easy planning for worship services.  The book is available online from Presbyterian Publishing Corporation/Geneva Press, Cokesbury, Amazon, Christian Book Distributors (CBD), and can easily be ordered (ISBN # 0-664-50134-6) from any local bookstore.  The book makes a great gift for Christmas, birthdays, ordination and installations. You can ordered autographed copies from us (3201 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19080). Please remember to mention how you would like the book inscribed when sending your check. There are no additional shipping costs, beyond the $2 for the first copy, for extra copies of the book for your friends who are pastors, organists, choir directors, church librarians, and others.

Ways to Support Carolyn's Hymnwriting

1) Your prayers are always appreciated. Augustine said "those who sing pray twice" and Carolyn's hymns are meant to be sung prayers to help congregations glorify and serve God in our daily living.

2) Carolyn is happy to give local congregations one-time free use of a hymn that she has written. We do appreciate your understanding of the request that you print the copyright and contact information (in smaller type) with the hymn text if you copy the hymn in a worship bulletin or church newsletter.

3)  Please share Carolyn's hymns with others (pastors and church musicians) in your community and your online friends. Please remember to include the copyright and contact information.

4) Your email notes about her hymns are always welcome, but please no attached files.  Email: bcgillette@comcast.net    We also welcome seeing printed worship bulletins from other churches (3201 Limestone Road, Wilmington, Delaware 19808-2198).
